Nestor Named Toronto Sun/George Gross Sportsman of the Year
December 14, 2009
Following the most successful tennis campaign of his illustrious career, Toronto-native Daniel Nestor has been named the George Gross / Toronto Sun Sportsman of the Year.
“I am humbled to receive this honour,” said Nestor. “The recognition means a lot since it is awarded for not only excellence in sport, but also for strong community work. This particular award is special to me because it is named after George (Gross), a true friend to tennis who we all miss dearly.”
During the 2009 season on the ATP World Tour, Nestor claimed nine doubles titles, the most he’s ever won in a single season, including the successful title defence of the Wimbledon crown. His 64 total championships are the most among active players and eighth on the all-time list. Nestor stands as the only player in singles or doubles to have won all nine Masters 1000 (formerly known as Masters Series) tournaments.
Nestor, who completed his 19th year as a pro, became the first Canadian to surpass the $1 million dollar mark in official prize money in a single tennis year. He spent 13 weeks as the No. 1 doubles player in the world, bringing his career total at the top of the ATP World Tour to 64 weeks. He captured five Masters 1000 tournaments with his Tour partner Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia, including Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid, Cincinnati and Paris. He was a semifinalist at the French Open, a quarter-finalist at the U.S. Open and won additional titles at Barcelona, Rotterdam and Basel, improving his record in finals to 9-2 in 2009.
The 37-year-old doubles specialist is one of only five men in the history of tennis (Agassi, Federer, Woodbridge, Woodforde) to have earned the career Golden Slam, winning all four major titles and an Olympic gold medal.
A proud Canadian, Nestor went 2-0 for his country in Davis Cup play, improving his doubles record to 25-4. He holds the all-time Canadian Davis Cup mark for most total wins (40), most doubles victories (25), best doubles team (12-1 with Frederic Niemeyer), most ties played (36) and most years played (17).
The annual Daniel Nestor Celebrity Charity event at the Donalda Club in Toronto has raised more than $600,000 for North York General Hospital and the Go for Gold program at Tennis Canada since 2003.
